Foster Care
Some children may need foster care for just a few days or weeks. Other children may
need to be in care for a few months or in some situations, several years. The average
length of time a child stays in care is between six months to one year.
Foster parents provide a safe and caring environment for each child. They work together
with the CAS staff to develop a plan for each child in their care. The ideal plan is usually
to re-unite the child or young person with his or her family. In situations where reunion
in not possible, the plan may include long term foster care or adoption.
While the legal responsibility for a child or young person remains with the CAS, foster
parents play an essential role in the child or young person’s daily life. The caring,
nurturing and stable environment that foster parents provide helps promote the healthy
growth and development of children in need.
